Bullying, Cyberbullying, and Diversity

Social interactions are an integral part of everyday school life for both students and teachers. Bullying is an aggressive behavior intentionally and repeatedly targeting persons, who cannot easily defend themselves, sometimes using digital media (cyberbullying). Bullying and cyberbullying can moreover be associated with group-related characteristics such as ethnicity, religion, or sexual identity. Our research focuses on individual and contextual factors of bullying and cyberbullying such as empathy, media use and media literacy, and classroom norms. We examine the role of bullies, victims and bystanders as well as the role of teachers and class climate. Our most recent research questions aim at bias-based bullying and teachers’ accuracy in identifying bullying.
